ABSTRACT

This was that in singling out work I was merely chipping away at one little corner of a vast edifice of discrimination that took in the loftier themes of relationships between the sexes, the future of the nuclear family and heaven knows what else. There is no shortage of books upon these themes. There are also more and more women, particularly married women, going out to work and, apart from academic studies, little is being written for and about them. The last thing I have tried to do is to write yetanotherbookaboutwomen's 'rights'. In this country anybody can still have his or her 'rights' if they choose to push hard enough. Women are the majority sex and they have had the vote for over half a century. In a time when we have to make the most of our resources I have merely tried to highlight an area of confusion and of waste.
