Yet as each of these wrinkles in the fabric of our society has been ironed out, one inequality has persisted and, to a degree even worsened. This has been the treatment of women in paid employment. For the whole of our present century, women have made up a third of the work-force. Twice in, 1914 and in 1939, they proved to be a most capable labour resource when men were called to the ranks from offices, factories and public transport.
