ABSTRACT

This chapter elucidates the foreign policy engagements of India and Russia in the context of their neighbourhoods. It investigates the issues, challenges and prospects of both India and Russia as important strategic partners. The chapter focuses on the growing security threats and challenges to carry forward the vision, aspirations and national goals of both these countries. It pays special attention to Pakistan and China and the scope of their relations with both these countries. The chapter deals with India's pursuit of an autonomous foreign policy since its independence which assured peaceful coexistence and territorial integrity with its neighbouring countries. Both these countries have rediscovered the strength of their partnership in the changing geo-political context and continue to root their relations in mutual trust, interests and a shared vision of a multipolar world order. The stable partnership between New Delhi and Moscow was cemented with the signing of the India-Soviet Friendship Treaty in 1971.
