ABSTRACT

The relationship between India and Russia has strengthened on the basis of mutual trust and understanding that has prevailed through the political, strategic, defence and economic commitment of both sides. In fact, India and Russia have constantly rendered unstinting support to each other on all issues of critical importance. It is important to analyse the relevance of the Indo-US strategic partnership in the contemporary international system, and whether the US will succeed in replacing Russia as a reliable partner of India. Both the US and Russia have grappled with the rise of terrorism. Decline in the relationship with Russia in the post Cold War era meant that India was left more isolated in the international system. However, the Clinton Administration was optimistic about moving closer to India. Russia-India defence cooperation remains steadfast as Russia has sold India weapon systems that it does not offer to other foreign clients.
