ABSTRACT

This chapter presents existing indices and rankings measuring soft power of chosen countries that put India's strengths in a comparative perspective. It analyses international public opinion polls to see the international image of India and current attractiveness to foreign audiences. The chapter examines the attractiveness of India for tourists, students, migrants and investors. Probably the most fundamental question in assessing the effectiveness of India's soft power is how this approach has helped in realising its foreign policy goals. The answer is difficult, not only due to the imminent constraints of this concept but also because there is no one official foreign policy strategy of India that can be used as a reference point for analysis. Afghanistan is often presented as the best proof of Indian soft power effectiveness or "civilian" strategy in the post-2001 period. Advancement of Indian interests in relations with Poland is supported by other public and private organisations from India.
