ABSTRACT

The Prannathi Nijanand Sampraday represents a literary-religious tradition in Mughal India. Dev Chandra (1581-1655) was the founder Guru of Nijanand Sampraday but it was established in institutional form and propagated with missionary zeal across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Delhi, Maharashtra and Bundelkhand by Prannath (1618-94). The Sampraday, popularly known as Shri Krishna Pranami Sampraday in the contemporary world, had its beginning in Bhuj Nagar, Kutch and established the seat in Jam Nagar (Nautan Puri in scriptures) in Gujarat. The tradition manifested many diverse religious currents prevailing in Mughal India but conferred singular identity to its adherents through consecration.
