Indian traders had a substantial presence in Iran in the seventeenth century.1 ey were able to keep up their numbers in the rst half of the eighteenth century despite adverse political situation, both in Iran and India. In Iran the Safavids passed into history aer the Afghan invasion. In India aer the death of Emperor Aurangzeb in 1707, Mughal rule rapidly lost control over the country. e rule of Nadir Shah brought no cheer to Indian traders in Iran but they did not leave the country. Aer his assassination in 1747, Indians tried to regain their lost position. is chapter explores how far Indians succeeded in their objective. It also sheds light on the business practices of the Indians.
