ABSTRACT

ISO 9000:2015 lists three 'core' standards: ISO 9000, ISO 9001, and ISO 9004. At this writing, there are 18 ISO QM standards, down from 29 a decade ago. This chapter briefly describes those of relevance to design and construction. ISO 9004: 2009 standard "provides guidance for organizations that choose to progress beyond" ISO 9001. It also includes self-assessment methodologies to help firms evaluate the level of maturity of their quality systems. The roots of ISO 14000 were formed in 1991 when ISO formed a Strategic Advisory Group on the Environment to consider whether a new standard would facilitate a common approach to environmental management, similar to quality management, and assist organizations to make improvements in environmental performance. Environmental engineers are also involved in removing problems caused by past activity, such as cleaning contaminated industrial land so it can be used for housing.
