ABSTRACT

This chapter first outlines the coach skills and characteristics that aid the process and increase the chances that the process will be effective. When negotiating tasks with the coachee it is important to actually negotiate such tasks rather than unilaterally assign them; give yourself sufficient time to negotiate the tasks; ensure that the tasks follow on from what has been discussed in the session; encourage the coachee to be as specific as possible concerning what they will do, when they will do it and how often they will do it; and identify and problem-solve any likely obstacles to task completion. It is easy to forget that coaching sessions occur within the context of the coachee's life and in that life there are many resources that the coachee can use to further their objective or goal.
