The Measures Taken has been regularly discussed as a p rom inent exam ple, even as the cu lm ination , of the early phase of B rech t’s ‘r ig id ’ and ‘indu lgen t’ didacticism . Since at the sam e tim e it represents the kind of theatre Brecht is deem ed to have rejected, or in some way modified, it is an im portant reference for any assess­ m ent of subsequent changes in his aesthetic or political ideas.
