ABSTRACT

THE CASE After graduating from medical school I successfully applied for the training programme in otorhinolaryngology, commonly known as ear/nose/throat (ENT) medicine, at a prestigious academic centre. It was a small wonder I was accepted, because the competition was fierce. I believe there were over 20 applicants for the one position. I had worked hard to stand out. I had contributed to scientific research during my early training and was co-author of two publications on congenital deafness. My active ‘student career’ at medical school was also recognised by the selection board. I fit the profile. “I’ll give you the chance to prove yourself”, were the exact words of the department head when he called me to tell me I had been chosen. I was thrilled and a little proud, I must admit.
