ABSTRACT
A fourth group, essentially outside the ambit of this paper, are the non-independent territories. These have economies that are considerably distorted by military requirements and generally do not fit the South Pacific pattern, except inasmuch as places like French Polynesia, Guam or American Samoa are overwhelming examples of the general South Pacific pattern of imports dominating shipping services. These countries export very little and because of the high standard of living they enjoy, sustained by the military expenditure of the metropolitan power, maintain very high levels of imports. This is an extreme example of what is a common case in the region.
