ABSTRACT

Another component essential to success of small business ownership is financial capital. Prior research suggests that women are disadvantaged in seeking commercial financing and more frequently start businesses with personal savings and investments. Many of the women in this study did use commercial financing, however, but almost always combined commercial sources with personal and alternative sources of funding. One woman secured a grant, and two received SBA guaranteed loans. None used venture capital to start their businesses, not even those in Stanley who started high-growth firms.
