ABSTRACT

Characteristics of enquiry undertaken for Women in Top Jobs, 1968 Because of the wish to gain information about women who, in terms of age, would be eligible for consideration for top jobs in the administrative class in the next twenty years or so, it was decided to choose informants through an entry cohort approach. The names, addresses and present employment, if any, of all women entering the Home Civil Service in 1947, 1948, 1949, 1953, 1954, 1960, 1961, 1962 and 1963 at the grade of Assistant Principal, were obtained from the Civil Service Commission. The years 1950, 1951, 1952 were omitted because all but 5 of the women entrants in these years had left the Service. Entrants during the early 1960s were included in order to provide some opportunity for comparing women administrators of different ages. This approach yielded a total of 36 women still in the home administrative class and a total of 23 who had left the Service.
