ABSTRACT

Are unfairly treated workers (namely, women) aware of the differential treatment described in Part I? According to social comparison theory,1 awareness is based on comparing one's rewards with the rewards of others. Awareness of discrimination (which is an objective dimension of actual unequal treatment) may lead to the development of feelings of relative deprivation (which is the subjective reaction to reward inequality), especially if the discrimination is perceived as unjustified. 2 There is evidence supporting both those who claim that women are aware of discrimination and those who claim they are not.
