ABSTRACT

Drawing on post-structural, human capital and post-colonial theories, policy sociology and the discourses of neoliberalism embedded in policy at government and institutional levels, this chapter discusses contentions surrounding the harmonisation of Islam with neoliberalism in the GCC region. The concepts discussed here serve as the theoretical categories as well as major themes for analysing the ways in which the governments of each of the six GCC countries have attempted to harmonise their neoliberal English education policy agendas with Islam in subsequent chapters.
