ABSTRACT

In Pakistan most lms are in Urdu and many are in Punjabi language, but there are also lms in Pashto, Balochi, Sindhi and English languages.1 Before the separation of Bangladesh in 1971, Pakistan had three main lm production centres: Lahore, Karachi and Dhaka.2 The area comprising what is now Pakistan was a wellestablished lm production centre before 1947. In undivided India, Lahore, situated in Punjab, was an established lm-making centre. There were studios, cinemas, producers, and distributors. Punjabi lm production was particularly well established here and there were three major studios in Lahore in the mid-1940s.
