ABSTRACT

Pakistan – a word, a name, a country, conjures up myriad images in the minds of rest of the world, with varied perspectives. History makes its way through twists and turns, carves out a valley of images about Pakistan is – a non-democratic state, to some even a failed state, with growing fundamentalism, a breeding ground of terrorists and suicide bombers; poor citizens in burqa and pathani salwar and a rich elite class. This, however, is the surface. If we scratch beneath and delve deeper into the nation state of Pakistan, like any nation state we will nd its distinct characteristics, with good, bad, ugly woven together in a beautiful tapestry. It is essential to gain a deeper understanding about Pakistan by not only studying its politics, economics and society but also its popular culture, art, literature, lifestyle and also the emerging, vibrant mass media. In fact, Pakistan, since its creation out of partition of the British empire in the subcontinent, has always tried vehemently to come out of the popular prejudices and stereotypes through every means possible, whether political, commercial or cultural.
