ABSTRACT

Terrorism has for long been part of human society, but of late it has assumed even more horric proportions. In the post-Cold War period it has achieved the status of a critical threat. Terrorism is a complex phenomenon and a method whereby an organized group seeks to achieve its avowed goals, chiey through the systematic use of violence. There are many causes for the rise of terrorism, such as social, economic, cultural and political. Any nation that has not satisfactorily attended to these problems makes itself a potential target for the emergence of terrorism. If people do not nd the system or the political processes compatible to their demands, they may opt for terrorism as a weapon to change the system. The terrorists’ aim is to replace the present governmental system with their own regime, and to run the political system according to their understanding.
