ABSTRACT

Pakistan claims the state of Jammu & Kashmir, a Muslim majority state, as an integral part of Pakistan, legitimizing its national identity. Kashmir has become an integral part of Pakistan’s imagination as a nation and hence remained a contentious issue for the last six decades. Kashmir becomes central to Pakistan’s security and foreign policy as a symbol of the injustice that India has done to Pakistan. Pakistan has taken both overt and covert eorts to gain Kashmir in all these years but the issue remains unresolved. The years since 1999 saw new initiatives for resolving the contentious issue.
