ABSTRACT

It is not possible to determine when Lahore was first established. There are various legends and proverbs current still. Some Arab geographers and historians had mentioned this city. The first reference to Lahore seems to be in the Arab geography written by Hudadul Alam in the tenth century Ad. It was stated there that Lahore was a city under the administrator of Multan and it had no Muslims. AlBeruni had referred to Lahore in two places as an area whose capital was Mandayakur. In the eleventh century Shaikh Ahom Janajani wrote that King Parikshit had established the city of Lahore. The city was deserted due to a devastating famine after the death of the king but it again became inhabited during the reign of the King Vikramjit. Later King Deepchand became the king of Delhi and sent his nephew Loharchand as the Governor of Punjab. Loharchand made Lahore his capital. He settled the name of the capital as Loharpur which was gradually changed to Lahore. A few Muslim historians have sometimes shown Lahore as area and sometimes referred to it as a city. The Persia historian Baihaiki while writing the history of Persia referred to Lahore as a city in the eleventh century. He had referred to its fort as Mandayakur. This kind of reference is available in the history of the eleventh century.
