ABSTRACT

Fatehpur Sikri was situated on a high hillock amongst the Vindhaya hill ranges about 37 km from Agra. Perhaps this place was uninhabited before the time of Akbar. Down below was the old village of Sikri, under the control of the Sikrawar Rajputs in the twelfth century. In 1196 the Turks occupied the town of Biyana nearby since when the village came under their control. The inscriptions on two mosques in the village record thirteenth and fourteenth century. One could see that these mosques had used materials of Hindu temples and show very clearly the remnants of Hindu architecture.
