ABSTRACT

The history of some of the towns of the Punjab is very old but that history has not been worked out fully. Among the old places Sirhind was one. Its origin is unknown and controversial. In his book Rauzatal Kayum Nuruddin Sirhindi stated that Sirhind was founded during the reign of Firoze Shah III. Since this place was in the midst of the jungles where lions dwelt, it was named Siharind (Siha meaning lion and ind meaning jungle). Later the name was changed to Sirhind. Another writer stated that one of the descendants of Krishna of the Yadava dynasty, Sahir Rao or Loman Rao was then ruling at Lahore. He founded this town in 530 Samvat. Another writer stated that the Chauhan kings had brought immigrants 900 years ago to settle this place. Some have suggested that this was founded during the reign of Sikandar Lodi.
