ABSTRACT

In August 1784 e India Act was passed by Parliament. As part of that act, the Company was instructed to investigate the possibility of eliminating the Company’s current policy of short-termed settlements which were largely due to Hastings’ administration. Since assuming the Diwani of Bengal, the Company had been oundering under the burden of assessing and collecting the province’s land revenue. e nal instructions from the Court of Directors did not reach Calcutta until nearly two years later and were carried by the new GovernorGeneral Charles Cornwallis.
