ABSTRACT
It was English, London merchants who were the seafaring adventurers and the driving force behind England’s participation in the voyages of Discovery. Even so, the English were, comparatively, latecomers to global exploration, following in the footsteps of their arch continental rivals, the Portuguese and Spanish; each using trade, exploration, and the high seas as their global ‘battleground’.
