ABSTRACT

MOST TOP WOMEN managers have either succeeded within the corporate environment or have started their own businesses. Far more is known about those who have succeeded in the corporate world. The women entrepreneurs/proprietors are a 'new breed', a recent development in 'liberation politics'. Driven by a lack of job satisfaction and low employment status, the female entrepreneur has ventured out on her own to satisfy her need to achieve, her desire to be independent, and, sometimes, out of sheer economic necessity. Researchers have only lately become aware of this phenomenon as more women opt for independence. Consequently, this 'new breed' is ill defined and somewhat mysterious. However, starting your own business is becoming a viable alternative for ambitious women, offering a way round the seemingly impenetrable barriers.
