ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the key aspects which apply to the extent to which green energy supply technologies, or at least low carbon technologies, can be installed in the right numbers. It talks about the fuel switching that is taking place and also might take place to reduce carbon emissions in China. The chapter discusses the extent to which Chinese strategies for fuel switching match up to the ecological modernisation (EM) criteria, and using the discussion examine the effectiveness of Chinese strategies and practice. In the world, as a whole, investment in renewable energy is outstripping that of investment in fossil fuels. The technological focus on developing renewable energy certainly falls in with a general ecological modernisation thrust. Having stabilised energy consumption, carbon emissions can then be steadily reduced, mainly by switching to low carbon fuels. Deployment of wind power and solar pv are key elements of the fuel switching strategy, as is the proliferation of electric vehicles (EVs).
