ABSTRACT

This chapter examines Spanish Official discourses on cultural promotion in relation to the Philippines, focusing on major foreign affair plans that the Spanish government followed from 2000 in order to reach to Asia. Some cultural events that the Spanish arts managers organised in the Philippines are also discussed, following sociologist Pierre Bourdieu´s relational theory, and in particular, his approach to the field of cultural production, which links the symbolic and economic power of cultural goods. Spanish arts funding policies in the Philippines are also explored. This discussion is supported by data gathered from a number of in-depth interviews of the author with several Filipino artists and arts managers. The Chapter concludes that Spanish arts funding programmes in the Philippines establish an imbalanced relationship between Spain and the Philippines, in which Spain has the power to make statements of authority in the Philippine arts scene.
