ABSTRACT

Great ideas and great plans find their way to paper every year in thousands of organizations. Those plans find their way on a shelf never to be seen again. One of the first questions I ask: “How does this work support your strategic or department improvement plan?” I want to know how this work aligns to what they hope to achieve. When the pause that follows becomes uncomfortable, I know that the team either does not know how the work relates to the organization's goals, has never seen the plan, or no plan exists. We, in effect, fly by the seat of our pants hoping that what we do achieves results.
