ABSTRACT

The Canadian susbsidiaries of foreign-owned petroleum multinational enterprises dominate the petroleum industry in Canada. The recent expansion of the state-owned Petro Canada has added a new presence to the industry but Imperial Oil (the Exxon subsidiary) is still the largest firm in the industry, with the other major foreign firms being Gulf, Texaco and Shell. Smaller firm participants are Mobil, Sun and British Petroleum while Irving Oil and Dome are Canadian-owned. Each foreign-owned subsidiary is part of a vertically integrated multinational enterprise (MNE).
