ABSTRACT

For counselors, the heart of the debate about online counseling is safeguarding the client-counselor relationship. Concerns center on integrity, how to protect the relationship against potential misunderstandings arising from a lack of visual clues, and how to ensure confidentiality over the Internet. Interestingly as cited in Morrissey (1997), Lanning reminded us at presentations he gives on the Internet when he asks audiences to suggest principles about online counseling that are different from face to face, he found: “No one has identified any yet.” Is there a difference? Searching for answers led to my fourth lesson on the road: listening to client voices.
