ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a pathway analogy to explain the basic concepts o f the Rasch model. Although the analogy is obviously and directly applicable to observations in developmental psychology, its relevance for the other measurement situations in the human sciences in which the Rasch model should be used is detailed in the following chapters. The high jump exemplar from the previous chapter w i l l also be useful in introducing a formal statement of the Rasch model as wel l as the ideas of the Rasch item characteristic curve (ICC).
