An African American Female Researcher's Journey: Epistemological, Conceptual, and Methodological Concerns

In some very important epistemological ways, I have been preparing to write this chapter all of my life, drawing on my life experiences of being African American, female, and middle class. That is, I have known for a long time, to paraphrase Dionne Farris' (1994) song, Human·:

Before I am black Before I am woman Before I am short Before I am young Before I am African I am Human

In other ways, there is no possibility I would have been able to write this chapter until now.
