Asian Americans: Refuting the Myth, Changing Faces
The label "model minority" has magnanimously been bestowed on Asian Americans by the dominant society. However, what few people choose to notice is that Asian Americans never asked for nor sought-such an "honor." Moreover, in the eyes of most Asian Americans, they do not see themselves as "model" (Chun, 1995). The reality is that most Asian Americans left their beloved homelands for political and/or economic reasons, and if situations, experiences, and necessity had not impelled them to leave, they would have remained in their homelands (Takaki, 1989).
