ABSTRACT

Practical approaches to assessing and systematically studying Hispanic populations are sorely needed (Artiola i Fortuni & Mullaney, 1998; Cervantes & Acosta, 1992; Echemendía, Harris, Congett, & Diaz, 1997; Mitrushina, Boone, & D’Elia, 1999; Mungas, 1996; Pontón & Ardila, 1999). This chapter focuses on the key variables that all neuropsychologists doing research or performing assessment with Hispanics should integrate into their work. For the development of research, and more specifically for the development of appropriate norms, a conceptual grid is provided. Each variable within this grid is discussed conceptually both in relation to the background provided in chapter 1 and to its impact on test development. A clinical model for assessing this patient population is also presented. A decision tree based on the key variables of language and acculturation is outlined to help clinicians make informed decisions in their evaluation of these patients. The chapter ends with a brief review of selected instruments and norms available to evaluate this population.
