ABSTRACT

Nancie Atwell is the best known proponent of the workshop approach to teaching reading and writing. In “Making Time,” she describes her work with eighth-grade students in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. The essay deals with both reading and writing, which Atwell sees as parallel activities, but her attention (like ours in this chapter) is on reading. As you read, think about the assumptions that underpin Atwell’s approach to reading, especially the Idea that reading in school should mirror the reading we do outside of school.
