ABSTRACT

Janna arrived at work early on Monday morning to set up a new scenario in the dramatic play center. She had been thinking about the camping scene and collecting items from home all weekend. She was so eager to get started that she felt a prickle of irritation when she saw the note on her desk from her supervisor: “Call me as soon as you get in.” Hoping she would still have plenty of time to set up the camping scene, Janna placed what she thought would be a quick call to her supervisor. Instead, she found herself wishing she had a cordless telephone so she could gather her materials while the director filled her in on the details of a complaint made by the mother of a child in Janna ‘s class. Toward the end of the conversation, Janna began to think perhaps the director held her responsible for the mother ‘s concern, but she was able to end the call by promising to talk directly with the parent. The opportunity presented itself sooner than she anticipated when the telephone rang again immediately, and Janna heard the mother herself say, “How could you let Shawnell play outside for so long on Friday? It was so cold, and now she has the flu!”
