ABSTRACT

In this chapter we sketch a theory of temperament, its development, and its influence on the individual’s adaptation. In keeping with the theme of this volume, we emphasize the role of context in all these issues. Because theorizing properly begins with a description of the phenomena the theory is intended to explain, we first present some illustrative empirical findings. Many students of temperament, personality, and development will be surprised by these findings, which is why a new theory is needed.
