ABSTRACT

What instruments can be used to obtain information to test a hypothesis? For many researchers, instrumentation is one of the most intriguing parts of planning a study. It is, at the same time, one of the most important and sometimes difficult aspects of research. There are many tools that may be used to obtain information. In the following pages, we look at some examples of the most widely used types of instruments. We also discuss, in some detail, two very important concepts that are related to the process of instrumentation: reliability and validity. Finally, we describe some ways to assess the reliability and validity of the scores obtained when different kinds of instruments are used.
