ABSTRACT

Health and illness are defined and explained differently by people throughout the world, often painted very colorfully in accordance with cultural norms and values. Native Americans, as with the other groups addressed in this book, view health and illness distinctly from other cocultures. For instance, in the Native American view, illness cannot be discussed separately from health. Problems of misunderstanding arise be-tween Native peoples and untrained Western health personnel; Native American outlooks and explanations of health and illness are unknown to the Western medical and health care providers.
