ABSTRACT

In this chapter I consider breakdowns in self-regulation, which I call problems of volition. I consider both clinical and empirical research, emphasize the importance of affect and motivation in personality functioning, and touch upon issues of consciousness, conflict, and defense. Not coincidentally, these are all topics that have been of concern to Singer and to which he has made major contributions (Singer, 1984, 1990; Singer & Bonanno, 1990).
