ABSTRACT

Linda Darling-Hammond (1997) articulated it clearly: “To this day, most schools in the United States do an extraordinarily poor job of educating students of color” (p. 1). Significant in this quote is the phrase, “To this day … “, for it alludes to the history of inequitable education for minority students in the United States. While facilities and finances play a role in the equitable delivery of education, the role of the teacher is paramount (Darling-Hammond, 1997; Joyce & Showers, 1988; Kozol, 1991). All things being equal, individual teachers make a significant difference in the learning processes of all students. Therefore, creating equitable education for students of color must begin with individual teachers.
