ABSTRACT

Exploring moral and religious issues is not the only or major reason for using selected literature in the classroom, but it is certainly a legitimate and important one. The problem in public schools, however, is determining how morality should be defined, on what basis, and who should decide. The RR claims that the Bible is the only foundation for making moral decisions, whether one is Christian, nonreligious, or a follower of another faith. They vehemently attack literature books on the grounds that they are antibiblical. Passages are taken out of context from both the selected works and the Bible to support their contentions that the works in question are immoral, un-Christian, or irreligious by biblical standards.
