ABSTRACT

This chapter is devoted to a macrolevel analysis of the orienting response (OR), and is related specifically to the response to signal stimuli. The term signal is taken to describe such stimuli that, having been under the influence of previous instructions, or influenced by a process of prior conditioning, may be regarded as significant stimuli. In this sense, signal stimuli may be identified with significance. This chapter covers how the OR behaves under the influence of such significance, or, as may be preferably understood, under the influence of different kinds of conditioning, including verbal conditioning. Verbal instructions are a specific type of this procedure.
