ABSTRACT

Unfortunately for these students, the odds of all four of them guessing the same tire are minimal. In the case of legal issues surrounding cheating on tests, the level of protection afforded to students who are accused of cheating is also fairly minimal, but legal challenges to disciplinary actions for cheating are growing (R. N.Roberts, 1986). As Buss and Novick

(1980) stated, “there was a time when students, practically speaking, did not have legal rights…. That time, undoubtedly, has passed” (p. 3). Stephen Davis, a leading researcher on cheating has sarcastically illustrated the tenor of the times: “If you’ve got a good lawyer, go ahead and cheat your heart out” (Stansbury, 1997a, p. 1).
