ABSTRACT

Individual teachers still practice media education in the United States, but their efforts have yet to add up to a coherent critical mass that can he called a media literacy "movement." Media education efforts remain isolated, sporadic, and disjointed. There are teacher-driven efforts in every state, notably California, Hawaii, Minnesota, New Mexico, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Texas, and Washington, but they are ad hoc-driven by the initiative of small groups of educators, and undercut by a lack of support from formal educational bureaucratic stn!Ctures and related funding streams.
