Several years ago a student named Evelyn arrived for class at Indiana Uni versity in Bloomington: she looked particularly long-faced and forlorn. She took her seat at the big seminar table in our classroom just off the li brary at Ernie Pyle Hall, folded her arms and plopped her head down.
