ABSTRACT
What do children need to know about language itself that they do not discover automatically while learning their first language and using it? The idea of language awareness deals with all those areas of knowledge about language that the school itself deliberately sets out to teach. As our knowledge about the nature of language grows, teachers have become more aware of how schools can help students learn more about their own language, and more about language and learning in general.
