ABSTRACT

Scientific investigations of alcoholism treatment programs have been conducted for

decades now. Interestingly, the recent pressure placed by the health care industry on providers to

offer efficacious and time-limited interventions caused many agencies to examine the treatment

outcome literature more carefully than in the past. In the meantime, researchers tried

to simplify the process of comparing interventions by conducting meta-analyses of both effi-

cacy and cost-effectiveness. This chapter begins with a summary of selected findings of several

recent reviews, and then outlines three alcohol treatment programs that were supported by them.
