Toward a Renewed and Revitalized Psychophysical Behaviorism
In this chapter, my goal is to summarize the arguments presented so far and to draw from them what for me (and I hope for some others) is the best possible resolution of the mentalism-behaviorism controversy in the context of our time and of what we now know. I also extract from the material so far presented what I believe are the best possible answers to the questions posed in Chapter 1. My aim is to offer a renewed and revitalized version of a behaviorist psychology that is more consistent with scientific and logical standards than is any existing system. Finally, I briefly review some of the contemporary versions of behaviorism to see how well they meet the criteria I have expressed here. In accomplishing these goals I am also expanding on comments made about many of these same issues in my earlier book (Uttal, 1998).
